International Photography Award / prize 3.000 €

In its goal to promote and support photographers, MedPhoto Festival, will –for a third time- grant the MedPhoto Award, Greece’s first ever international photography prize. 
After the 2017-2018 Award Contest in which 350 photographers from 30 different countries took part, a new open call for submissions begins this year. The MedPhoto Award will be granted to a photography project (final or in progress) that will be selected by an international jury and the prize will come with a 3.000€ grant.

“This competition’s submission process is powered by LensCulture. Photographers will be invited to login or create a new LensCulture account before submitting their work.”

-A series up to 12 images
-Supporting text of up to 300 words describing the concept and the purpose of the project
-Each applicant can only submit one project of up to 12 photographs forming a series.
-Submission fee 20

The competition’s subject is open and there is no restriction regarding age, gender, nationality.
The Award ceremony will take place in Rethymno in November in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete.

International Jury

– Oliver Chanarin
Artist

Oliver Chanarin (born 1971, London, UK) is an artist living and working in London. He is one half of the photographic duo Broomberg & Chanarin who have had numerous solo exhibitions, most recently at The Centre Georges Pompidou (2018) and the Hasselblad Center (2017). Their participation in international group shows include the Yokohama Trienniale (2017), Documenta, Kassel (2017), The British Art Show 8 (2015-2017), Conflict, Time, Photography at Tate Modern (2015); Shanghai Biennale (2014); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014); Tate Britain (2014), and the Gwanju Biennale (2012). Their work is held in major public and private collections including Pompidou, Tate, MoMA, Yale, Stedelijk, V&A, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Baltimore Museum of Art. Major awards include the ICP Infinity Award (2014) for Holy Bible, and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize (2013) for War Primer 2. Broomberg and Chanarin are the winners of the Arles Photo Text Award 2018 for their paper back edition of War Primer 2, published by MACK. Oliver Chanarin is professor of photography at the Hochschule für bildende Künste (HFBK) in Hamburg and is a founding member of the Masters programme in photography at The Royal Academy of Art (KABK).

– Federico Clavarino
Photographer

Federico Clavarino (born in 1984 in Turin, Italy) is a photographer and educator based in Lisbon and Madrid. His publications include Hereafter, Skinnerboox, 2019, La Vertigine, WittyKiwi, 2018, The Castle, Dalpine, 2016, Italia o Italia, Akina Books, 2014, and Ukraina Pasport, Fiesta Ediciones, 2011. His work was shown at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2017 within the exhibition BlankPaper, Histoires du Present Immediat, and in other group shows such as Sulla Nuova Fotografia Italiana, Viasaterna, Milan, 2016. Solo exhibitions include Eel Soup, Pinguin, Bruxelles, 2018 (with Tami Izko), Italia o Italia, JEST, Torino, 2017 and The Castle, Temple, Paris, 2016. He taught at BlankPaper school in Madrid from 2011 and 2017, and since then has been lecturing and giving workshops in various art centres, universities and independent schools around Europe.

– Alvaro Deprit
Photographer

Alvaro Deprit was born in Madrid and has been living in Italy since 2004. He studied German Philology in the ‘UCM’ of Madrid and ‘Otto Friedrich’ of Bamberg (Germany) and Sociology in the Università D’Annunzio of Chieti (Italy). He focuses on the idea that the weave of the world comes from relational processes -the idea that reality is less solid than it appears. He is therefore interested in the narrative nature of identity seen as an emerging process and of the individual that exists as a relational pattern. Alvaro’s work has been exhibited in festivals and galleries in Arles, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, London and New York and his clients and publications include L’Espresso, Newsweek, Playboy, Internazionale, Vanity Fair, New York Times, Das Magazin, The Fader, Das Capital, Riders, Bulletin, El Pais, NZZ, D La Repubblica, The Guardian, British Journal of Photography. He won among others the PHotoEspaña Human Values Award, British Journal of Photography Award, Viewbook Contest, Fotocanal.

– Marion Hislen
Curator

Marion Hislen is Commissioner for Photography in the French Ministry of Culture. She is a specialist curator of photography and a graduate of Advanced Studies in sociology. In 2011 she founded Circulation(s) Festival which promotes young European photography and attracts every year more than 50000 visitors. From 2011 to 2015, she was responsible for the cultural activities regarding books and photography of Fnac. In 2005, she founded Fetart, an association for the promotion of young artists-photographers. She has organised several exhibitions for Centquatre and the Rencontres d’Arles and has also organised the exhibition Paris-Beijing, the first retrospective in France devoted to Chinese contemporary art. In 2017, she was artistic Director of Rencontres Photographiques du 10e in Paris.

– Katerina Stathopoulou
Curator

Katerina Stathopoulou is an Assistant Curator at Public Art Fund in New York where she is preparing a multi-year photography exhibition series. The inaugural exhibition features newly commissioned works by Elle Pérez (opening August 2019). Prior to PAF, Stathopoulou was a curator in the Department of Photography at MoMA. In her 5+ years at MoMA she worked on a broad range of projects, ranging from strictly photographic to multidisciplinary exhibitions. Most recently she worked on Being Modern: MoMA in Paris (2017) at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Additional projects included The Shape of Things: Photographs from Robert B. Menschel (2016), Walid Raad (2015), and New Photography (2013). From 2011 to 2012, she worked at the International Center of Photography. Stathopoulou is a contributor to numerous publications, including Ai Weiwei: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors (2019) and the upcoming Among Others: Blackness at MoMA (September 2019).
